Prepare Your New Home Before Moving In

Before you make the big move into your new home, you’ll want to ensure you leave enough time to connect your electricity, internet and gas (if needed). Internet can sometimes take longer than other utilities, so ensure you’re prepared well in advance. Check different providers for a great service and price in your new area (if moving to a whole new location), and get in contact with them weeks before the move.

Do a Deep Clean
If possible, consider doing a deep clean or professional clean on your new abode before you move in (if it hasn’t been done already). Cleaning an empty house is far easier than cleaning with your furniture, pets and children – take the opportunity to do this in advance. Focus on key areas like the kitchen, bathroom, window coverings and any appliances left from the previous owner (dishwasher, oven, etc.).

Think About Your Layout
Knowing where your furniture and other items will go prior to moving day will be a huge help to you. You can refer to real estate photos or floor-plans of your new property to get an idea of what rooms and spaces your furniture will fit into. Declutter
By decluttering before a move you will reduce the amount of time spent packing and money spent transporting on the day. Ideally, you should consider de-cluttering months before moving day – the moment you start house hunting is a good place to start, that way you’ll be more than prepared for when the time comes to move.

Change Your Address
Changing your address may seem like an obvious task but it is also often overlooked, and weeks later you’re wondering why your mail isn’t getting delivered. Changing your address can easily be done a couple of weeks in advance, and is as simple as going into your local post office to redirect all of your mail. If you want to save some money you can contact each organisation/company individually – but note that this may take some extra time.

Organise Your Moving Boxes
To be extra prepared for the big day it’s a good idea to start grabbing all of your moving day essentials ahead of time. Head to your local storage or hardware store to get your boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and any other items you may need. You can then start organising your boxes into rooms, labelling them and even packing your non-essentials. Come moving day the most time consuming tasks are complete, so you’re only left with packing essential items and moving the boxes.

If you have young kids or pets, consider having a family member or friend look after them on the moving day. The chaos of moving can be emotionally stressful for children and pets, so ensure you have a plan for them on the day. When arriving at your new home with your pets, surround them with familiar toys and smells, so they can start to settle into their new abode.
