Making the Most of Your Laundry

Let’s face it, we don’t all have the luxury of having a huge laundry, and strangely enough, the laundry is one the spaces in our house where we do the most work. Whether you’re washing, cleaning, storing, drying or folding, a functional and tidy laundry can do wonders. If you’re thinking of re-organising your space without the major renovation, these laundry design tips may help.

Stack appliances up
Appliances take up a huge amount of space, but we can’t do without the good old washing machine or even tumble dryer. In a small space, stack your washing machine and dryer vertically. If you have a top load washing machine, leave enough space for the lid to open/close by mounting the dryer a bit higher on the wall.

Opt for an L-shape bench
An L-shape layout provides room for ample bench space and cabinetry, and will help on not wasting any precious space.

Ditch the dryer
If you’re really short on space, ditch the tumble dryer and hang a sturdy horizontal pole between walls or cupboards. You can utilise this hanging space for clothes you don’t want outside with the harsh sunshine. Alternatively, if you have the budget, opt for a combination washer/dryer unit.

Hide the linen basket
Linen baskets are always an awkward shape or size and can take up way too much space in your laundry. Try incorporating your linen basket into a cupboard, or even opt to have it in the bathroom or bedroom.

Save on sink space
Circular sinks are probably the most beneficial when it comes to saving space on your laundry bench. If you’re lacking bench space as it is, try having a small circle sink in the corner to maximise on space.

Above and below cupboards
Invest in some good cabinetry and build up. Floor to ceiling cupboards will be your best friend in a small space, as well as cupboards or shelves above and below your laundry bench. You can fill these cupboards with all your laundry needs – to utilise each cupboard and shelf space the most, invest in some storage boxes/baskets to organise your items.
